Reading

There are more than five thousand libraries in Australia. Of these five thousand, about seventy-two are mobile libraries. Some libraries cover a strip of beaches in Australia called the Gold Coast. Trucks and trailers carry thousands of books to children who cannot get to a local library.

These trucks make stops at schools to talk about books and tell stories. Travis, a librarian on one of the trucks, says “Some stories leave children with something to think about. Others bring laughter or tears.” They know the stories can get children excited about books and reading so the borrow lots of books.

One of the library trucks is a solar-powered high-tech library. There is a solar panel on the top of the truck, six computers and a printer unit. The truck also has six hair-conditioning units, two banks of fluorescent lights, nine spotlights and a surround sound stereo system. It is also wheelchair accessible, has a microwave, fridge, and a bathroom.
