Pargas Library- Finland
The Pargas Library in England brings books to the Archipelago, the rocky islands surrounding the Gulf of Finland, by boat. ‘Book Boat’ or ‘Library Boat’ is ‘Bokbåt’ in Swedish or ‘Kirjastovene’ in Finnish. The boat is called ‘Kalkholm’, meaning ‘Limestone Island’ in Swedish, and carries about 600 books. The boat crew includes a librarian and an assistant. It sails among the Archipelago islands and makes about 10 stops. The children come down to shore to collect the. ir books from May to October. Due to severe weather in winter the boats cannot travel during winter months. Maj-Len, the head librarian in Pargas, oversees the book boat. She says “Reading has become very important to our book-boat children. If the book boat didn’t come, they might not be reading at all.”

How do We get our Books?

Blackpool Beach Library – England
The Blackpool Beach Library delivers books to people who are relaxing at the beach. The library is a wheelbarrow! There are two library assistants that cart the books up and down the beach. There is no need for a library membership-when a borrower finishes a book they just bring it back to the wheelbarrow when it comes through another day. The librarians want to promote the joy of reading. “Libraries are services, not buildings” says one librarian.

Share-A-Book-England
The Share-A-Book library is a van in Gloucester, England, that transports children’s books. The librarian travels to the countryside where many children don’t have access to regular public libraries. Most of the children don’t have books at home to read or to share with their families. Share-A-Book has books for children who are learning English as a second language. They also have toddler story times and take part in special celebrations in the Gloucester area.
